Samuel Smith of Ebbw Vale in the parish
of Aberystruth Engineer abiding with Thomas
Pritchard
of the same place Fireman.
I remember Monday Morning
4th Nov[embe]r last- I was going up with
the Superb Engine belonging to my master
Messrs. Harfords of which I am Engineer
and Thomas Pritchard is fireman
When we came up from [?] over
the Wharf at Pillgwenlly to the Waterloo
Public House
by the Turnpike Gate
we met the Mob a little beyond at
the Gaer Pool . We stopped the Engine
& returned to the Waterloo to let the
mob pass as we were upon the
Tram Road & they could then get
upon the Turnpike Road - The Mob
were all armed with Guns
Spears &c in front I saw Jack
the fifer
with a Pike and Stick
