were drinking and they ordered them to join us - some of them did
so - We then went to Llewellin's house where I saw the House full
of Men most of them with Arms - Some with Pikes one had a Gun
and some with large Sticks in their hands - I also saw a greater
number of Men by the Garden Gate - I believe most of them were
Armed but it was so dark I could not well see. I am certain I saw
one of them had a Pike I did not see Llewellin there - We remained
there about half an hour when John Thomas ordered us to march
on to the Race Course beyond Pontypool - I was then ordered to go I
did so with many others when we got to the Race Course there was
a great number of persons there most of them Armed with Pikes some
with Guns and Pistols and some with Sticks - Orders were given to
march to the Turnpike road and we all went and then went
on to the New Inn - this was about ten or eleven o'clock - I then
saw Jones the Watchmaker - We remained there about ten minutes
when Jones ordered them all to go on towards Newport - the Pikemen
was ordered in front - We all fell into Marching Order - I believe there
were from 3 to 400 - We marched five a breast towards Newport - We
stopped at the Lower Lock at Cross-y-Celog - shortly after I was in the
House, Jones ordered all the Men all out to march forward as there
was no time to lose - the Men obeyed him - I tried to escape and get
behind a Settle in the Kitchen - When Jones said if I did not go
out he would blow my brains out - he had his hand in his
breast - I was so frightened that I cannot say if he had a Pistol or
not - this was about 11 o'clock I went out and we all marched
on towards Newport five abreast until we came to a Turnpike Gate
about half a mile from Newport I then saw Jones by the Door of the
Turnpike house - We stopped at the Turnpike Gate a long time some of
them said - We are waiting for the Blackwood Men I from there made
my escape and returned to Pontypool.
