Canterbury 3rd Decr 1839.

Sir,
________ I am desired by the Mayor of this City and
Borough to say in answer to your Letter received by him
this morning that from enquiries which have been made
it appears William Davies arrived at the Rose Inn in this
City on Wednesday morning the 20th ulto at 4 oClock by one of
the Dover Coaches from London, he slept there, and had
breakfast during which he asked the Waiter if he knew
what time the Packets left Dover for Calais and upon his
being answered in the negative he did not press his enquiries
but stated he was then going out for a short time, would
leave his Portmantau, Great Coat, Macintosh, & Carpet Bag and
return that Evening to sleep, he returned in the Evening
accompanied by a little Boy and took away his Carpet Bag
